The iron cross predates the nazis, while sure, it has become a big icon to the nazis during WW2, that doesn't necessarily mean it was always affiliated with them. It was a symbol of Prussia and later Imperial Germany. The Germans awarded it for bravery and other achievements. That's why you still see some peeps in the German military rocking it to this day.
